How to use the “Dealing With Emotions (God’s Way)” chart:

Prayerfully consider if there is someone you can ask to encourage you while you work through this chart. Use it when a situation seems overwhelming or you are overwhelmed by your emotions. Also when you are “stuck” and continue being distracted or preoccupied with a situation. Pray first and give this process to God. Ask Him to reveal to you what you need to see about yourself and about Him.

What happened?

Briefly write out the problem or situation. If you have a problem isolating the particular issue at hand, try working on the next column and come back to this one later.

What are your feelings, thoughts or actions?

You may not be able to identify all of these, but list the ones you can identify. Your feelings, thoughts or actions will usually reveal and identify your wrong thinking (unbelief).

Is there something in your past that causes these feelings to be more intense?

Many times it looks like you are reacting to the present situation but in reality, this is bringing up an unresolved wound from the past. If your actions seem to be way off the scale for the present “infraction”, you need to ask God to bring to mind what the hurt is.

What is your unbelief?

Can you identify what you are not believing? If someone is working through this chart with you, their input may be helpful at this point. If you can’t pinpoint the unbelief, ask God to reveal it to you.

What is the truth?

Ask God to bring to your mind specific verses that deal with the issue. List all the truth from Scripture that correlates with the unbelief.

Here are some other questions to ask yourself:

Who or what am I putting my hope in or focusing on?

Does God know about this situation?

What were my expectations? How were they not met?

Is there something affecting my feeling of being significant or valued?

Who or what am I taking responsibility for? Whose responsibility is it? (God’s)

How should I pray?

Now that your unbelief and the truth have been identified, you need to use the grace exchange (put off and put on). This step is the most important; do not skip it!

  1. Fix your eyes on Jesus instead of the situation that has distracted us. Pray through the Tabernacle, focusing on Him and what He has done for us. Now, abide in His presence by praising Him for who He is.

  2. Confess (put off), agree with Him about what you have not believed either about Him or about this situation.

  3. Ask Him to believe His truth in you (put on) and give you the desire to believe it. List the truths He has shown you. Thank Him for what He will do and for what He has already done in bringing you to this point.
